Am I allowed To Have A Service Animal In A Downtown San Diego Residential Apartment-Hotel?
Hi~
I hope someone can help answer my question. I am disabled and want to move from the Inland Desert Region of California to a Residential Hotel in Downtown San Diego. I have a small service dog and he alerts me to sounds I can’t hear, helps me pick up things I drop and alerts me to smells like smoke. I have heard that it is difficult to rent an apartment with a dog, even a service dog. He is a great little companion, too. I do have a written doctor’s recommendation for him and he has been approved by the state of California for the Assistance Dog Special Allowance program. Does anyone have any advice on how to approach the prospective landlord? Does anyone have experience or advice with a similar issue? What are the legalities in San Diego or CA? I will be contacting the landlord’s this week and could sure use a little advice. Thanks very much!

Fair housing laws specify that service dogs ARE allowed ANYWHERE even if the community does not allow ANY pets. As long as you provide them with a copy of your doctors note that you are disabled and the dog is a service dog.
Also- They CANNOT charge you ANY pet rent, deposits or fees. Keep that in mind.
